Zambia Sugar Plc, an ABF Sugar Company and leading sugar producer in Zambia, is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the position of Safety Spotter in the Safety and Risk Department.
Safety Spotter – 1 Position
This position reports to the SHERQ Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and assessing hazardous and unsafe situations and developing measures to ensure personal safety. The role includes correcting unsafe acts or conditions through the regular line of authority, with emergency authority to prevent or stop unsafe acts when immediate action is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Record unsafe acts and conditions identified during daily patrols of work areas and report them to section officials and the Safety Coordinator.
- Inspect work areas daily to identify fire hazards and advise section officials on measures to prevent fires.
- Record defects on fire equipment and report them to the Fire Officer.
- Communicate to employees, stakeholders and contractors their individual responsibilities and roles in maintaining the commitments of the SHERQ policy.
- Ensure practicality and alignment of the Illovo Integrated Risk Management System (IIRMS) through Group Level Guidelines (GLG) into site-level procedures to support operational effectiveness.
- Ensure SHERQ objectives and targets from the corporate office and business unit are included as measurable key performance indicators for responsible persons.
- Ensure risks associated with ABF are identified, analysed, evaluated and modified through formal risk treatment methodologies in line with business risk criteria.
- Maintain continuous communication and consultation with relevant stakeholders and monitor and review controls to determine whether further risk treatment is required.
- Assist, where applicable, in implementing the IIRS framework to integrate risk management into governance, strategy, planning, monitoring, continual improvement, reporting, policies, values and culture.
- Take necessary measures to ensure legal and statutory requirements are known and complied with within areas of responsibility, applying the OSHACT of SA (85 of 1993) and its regulations where required as the Illovo Group minimum legal base.
Qualifications and Experience
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Diploma in Safety Management or Environmental Management.
- Preferably 2 or more years' experience in a Safety Management or Environmental Management role.
- Experience in an agriculture or industrial environment will be an added advantage.
- Knowledge of applicable Zambian laws, including the Factory Act Cap 441 and Occupational Health and Safety Act 2010, is essential.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Suitably qualified applicants must provide certificates verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
